Overview:

A marine Life Jacket is provided for every person on board the ship. You can find it in your Locker.

Keep your life jacket in good condition and in a READILY ACCESSIBLE LOCATION in your cabin.

Report to SAFETY OFFICER any deficiency such as missing Whistle, Light, Reflective Tape, etc.

Marine life jackets are located in each cabin and in boxes at the lifeboat and life raft stations. All manned watch stations are also provided with lifejackets.

There are three types of life jackets available onboard. All life jackets are of SOLAS 74 approved type.

In case of lifeboat alarm you should bring your life jacket from your cabin if you are not at a distant location. If you are not close to your cabin you proceed directly to the muster station where you may obtain a lifejacket.

Unless specifically marked the life jacket may be worn out either side and it is easy to don. Make sure that you tighten the straps well, otherwise they may slide causing the lifejacket to be dislocated when you are floating in the sea. It is very difficult to tighten the straps when you lie in the sea.

If you have to jump into the sea, try to get as close to the water as possible. Jump with your legs first and body straight. Press your elbows to your sides and take a grip at the top of the jacket front and pull down to prevent the jacket from hitting your chin or neck when you hit the water. Avoid jumping from heights greater than 10 meters.

The jacket maintains its buoyancy even if it is punctured or ripped. It will give you a stable floating position with face up and the body inclined backwards. Swimming is best performed with backstroke.

The jacket has a whistle. It is also provided with retro-reflective tape in order to facilitate discovery with the aid of searchlight.

Every marine life jacket is fitted with a light with battery, which is self-activated when immersed in the water, providing a luminous intensity of 0.75 cd for a period of at least 8 hours.
